| This article deals with designer lamps and my
suggestions as featured in the August issue of HomeLiving magazine*.
|
- For the monochromatic settings that are popular now, use
the natural linen, cotton or silk shades in neutral colors.
- Color tonality is important in selecting a shade. Stark
white can result in too much glare. Soften your shade colors.
- The lower edge of the lamp shade should be at eye level
for reading applications.
- Try mixing different styles and shapes of lamps in a
room. Add a torchier floor lamp to your lamp lighting ensemble. They have a
wonderful ambiance and do wonders for empty corners.
- To spice up an existing lamp, add a decorative trim to
the bottom edge of the shade. To make it more formal, try using a silk braided
trim. To make the room more festive and colorful, apply glass-beaded trim and
change the lamp considerably. The glass-beaded trim is spectacular on small
shades and accent lamps. This treatment also works well to change up a
chandelier's simple miniature shades.

The following are questions
sent to me from clients, friends, web site visitors and everywhere else.
If you have a question . |
| Question |
Answer |
| "I have a small room that makes me
claustraphobic, what can I do to make it seem larger?" |
Try a mirror, or a painting with depth to it.
A mural on a wall is unique and can create an excellent illusion of
depth. |
| "My husband paints so I have a lot of
"artwork" how should I hang them?" |
Group paintings or artwork by size or subject
matter. Try to hang them at eye level. |
| "My study is so dark, what can I do to lighten
the room?" |
Paint, lamps, wall sconces or minimal window
treatments can help in lightening a room. |
| "Is it ok to mix my antique furniture with my
more contemporary?" |
Yes! But if you have pure period, stay away
from mixing. |
| "My kids are getting past the infant stage,
any ideas on childrens furniture?" |
I love bean bags, they are inexpensive, fun
and durable. Distressed woods or washed paint for tables and area
rugs. |
